I hate Cingular

>> Monday, October 02, 2006

So, I got my phone bill today. See it up there? That's not a fib. That, my friends, is the truth. For the month, my cell phone bill is $590.59. That's not pesos, either.

As it turns out, each time I tried dialing my husband and got some sort of weird, "You can't connect now..." announcement in Spanish - I was being charged... 64-66 cents per minute. Let's just say, there's a bunch of those. ALL of my phone conversations averaged about 5 minutes long - with the exception of a couple 15 minute ones, and TWO 30 minute ones.

I hate Cingular. I hate ALL American cell phone companies. Why? Because they are unable to offer an acceptable rate. I know it can be done. How do I know? Because just about 2 yrs. ago, both my brother AND my sister got an AWESOME deal through AT & T. (Which is now, unfortunately CINGULAR.)

Still, I managed to rack up the largest cell phone bill I've ever seen.

So, to remedy this there will be some changes in my phone usage:

1.) I will utilize my sister's American cell phone as much as possible.
2.) I will utilize the Vonage phone (post work hours) at work.
3.) I will accept phone calls to my Mexican cell.
4.) I will look into a Vonage phone while at my sister's house, then will transfer it (or a new one) to our new abode (whenever we find a place.)
5.) I will look into internet phones - skype.com, etc.

Verizon has an International Long Distance play for people who call from the U.S., to Mexico, for .09 cents a minute. I think that C. is going to have to get that and call me on my MX cell.

Anywho, this was a major blow today.

Goal #1 for the week: Buy gas for Bullet

>> Sunday, October 01, 2006

Mission accomplished.

I may have purchased the wrong color (verde or roja), but nonetheless - Bullet is full. $320 pesos later. (About $31 later.)

I said, "Lleno por favor." (Fill it up, please.)

Nice. This week, (given I feel better), I shall buy a membership to Costco; hence, Goal #2.

Cold in Cabo

Yup, I think I have my first, full-blown cold in Cabo. (C. is just getting over the same thing in Ohio.) It's weird. It's the strangest sensation to be cold, stuffy and have a sore throat when it's beautiful outside, 90 degrees and sunny.

At home if I had a cold right now, it would be about 50 degrees at night, maybe 60 during the non-sunny day. Now that is good cold weather.

I took a couple of "SinuTabs" (made by Pfizer) - needed more. Went to Mega (grocery store) they had none. (I even asked the lady at the counter - in Spanish.) So, I bought "Tylenol Sinus" that claims that it's "maxima eficacia" (maximum strength) - WHATEVER.

I still can't breathe. AT all.

I will FIND those SinuTabs and I will take them and I will breathe again.

I think I'll have to bring stuff (medicines) from The States back with me because I know what I can and can't take. For example, Sudafed is a big no-no for me. It makes my heart flutter. (Dr. said "no" to it.) However, right now, at 9:49 p.m. on a Sunday night - I'd give just about ANYTHING for some 24-hour Dristan nasal spray.

Ok, off to bed.

Oh wait - want to hear my latest trick? I've been using toilet paper as tissues for my nose - I can just stuff the used tissues in the cylinder until it's full - then throw them all away at once. I think it's ingenious. Others, well - you might think it's gross. It's working for me, though.

When Chloe was sick a month or so ago, I made her a necklace with a roll of toilet paper on it, that way, when her nose ran, her tissues were at her fingertips. She totally wore it. I wonder if they'd look at me funny if I wore that to work tomorrow.

Ok. I'm off to bed.

My Own Reality

>> Saturday, September 30, 2006

I can't believe I'm here.

I cannot believe that I no longer work at Owens Community College.
I cannot believe that I'm living in CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico.
I can't believe I have a JOB in Mexico.
I cannot believe any of it.

I can't believe that I shop in a grocery store where EVERYTHING is all in Spanish.
I can't believe that I took pesos out of the ATM.
I can't believe that I am DRIVING in another country.

I feel like I am very much so living someone else's life. I almost feel like I'm watching someone else's life... Nothing seems real.

It's just all so foreign. Obvioiusly, the being in a new country - but every experience I've been having for the past two months is new. Literally, every experience. I'm discovering everything. It's disconcerting to not have a frame of reference, however - it's also invigorating to see and participate in so many new experiences.

Again - WHAT IS GOING ON?

Whose life am I living?

--

I think I might feel like myself as soon as C. gets here. I'm independent, yadda yadda -- I just feel so incomplete without him here. Or, after I get my own place it'll probably feel more permanent, more true.

Anywho - what a flipping surreal experience.

I live in Mexico.

W.O.W.

  • Went to Immagrcion today. The FM3 should be delivered to work tomorrow.
  • Am tired.
  • Read a children's book out loud with Spanish tonight, because, according to her, "I'm just learning and I need some practice." My pronunciation blows. Nice to have her correct me. She said, "It's good that I'm Mexican!" :-) Indeed, it is.

Hump Day

>> Wednesday, September 27, 2006

(I always hated the term, "Hump Day." Huh? What? Ew.)

Overall feelings regarding today, Wednesday, September 27th:

  • I'm tired.
  • Work was exhausting. Filled with meetings, heat and planning.
  • Pilates wore me out.
  • I ate way too much chocolate. (Those mini hershey's things were in the office.)
  • I'm weirdly tired.
  • Got my FM3 photos. (They made me take my earrings out and pose with my hair tucked behind my ears. Huh? I look like some stick-out-eared elf. Nice.)
  • Tomorrow I head down to Immigration in San Lucas to get my FM3. (They'll have me sign something and get my fingerprints.)
Ok, my throat hurts. I'm going to bed.

Update on C.

>> Tuesday, September 26, 2006

C. got his official copy (with gold seal) of his Ohio Real Estate License. I believe we're going to have him start his FM3 process when he comes here (to Cabo) to visit in October.

It's becoming a big more real now.

A small step, but a GiAnT leap for moi

Sadly, this is a big deal to me:

1.) I went to Mega (supermarket) by myself. (This entailed adding up "pesos" in my head and then paying and tipping appropriately. (You tip the baggers here.)

2.) I used the ATM and withdrew pesos. (Not the big of deal, but still.)

3.) I drove through a Mexican "detour" down a road I've never been on without hitting the high-curbs on the right side and the orange cones on the left side. (Go me.)

Yes, each day is a triumph.

"Welcome HOME"

My sister left Cabo for Vegas today, when I arrived back into Cabo. She emailed me while waiting on a FOUR HOUR LAYOVER (huh?!) in Phoenix.

She said, "Welcome HOME."

Hmm...

Let's ponder that second word: "HOME."

Up until this point, my "home" has been in Ohio. But, can it be that my "home" may be becoming this part of the world? Quite possibly.

Maybe right now it's just Cabo, but just as soon as my best friends (C & Nattie) join me - it will indeed become "home."

Una dia mala

Today was annoying.

This evening was lovely.

I really enjoy my "family time." It sounds cheesy, but it's great. I look forward to seeing the kids everyday when I come home from work. Living with my sister, niece and nephew has made me see how cool kids are; how much they really do add to daily life.

It is my pleasure to watch these little personalities develop. In all honesty, it's a gift.

Don't run with a Rottweiler

Currently, I'm residing with two dogs:

  • Kiera - a blue heeler
  • Riley - a Rottweiler puppy
I went running today and decided to take Kiera and Riley. Kiera has gone before - she's awesome. No leash necessary. She also has a particular disdain for Mexican men (I know, not politically correct - but it's true) so in some strange way she's very protective of everyone in the house. (Makes me feel better, I have to admit.)

Anywho - took Riley with us this time. (Riley chewed the edge of my sister's super-cool coffee table today, so I thought it would be good to take her out of the house for a bit.) Riley was horrible. This enormous dog, with TONS of energy actually SAT DOWN on the ground 10 minutes into our run. Seriously. She was horrible. By the end of the 35 minutes, I was nearly pulling this huge rottweiler puppy. Insane.

Point to this story: None really. Except Riley isn't a good runner.

Nice addition to the story that made me feel special: Chloe was VERY upset that I went running on the golf course "in the desert" because there are "snakes everywhere" and I'm "never allowed to do that again."

Ah, to be loved.

I swear I just saw Jimmy Buffet

On my 3 minute drive to work this a.m. I think I saw a Jimmy Buffet look-alike crossing the street in his wetsuit and with his board.

I swear it was him.

Or, maybe I just wanted it to be him. Nonetheless, I may or may not have just seen Jimmy.

A Lovely Saturday in Paradise

>> Saturday, September 16, 2006

I live in paradise.

Today I experienced a paradise-esque day.

  • Slept in. Didn't have to wake early to deal with a hurricane or hurricane preparation.
  • Visited a lovely salon with my sister and niece and receieved a crisp, clean french manicure and pedicure. (Felt pretty.)
  • Drove with sister, niece and nephew down to Cabo to feast on the best sushi in the world at Nick-San. (Seriously, it's the best.)
  • Ate carmel "explotion" Haagan-Daas ice cream.
  • Walked in at just the right moment to a movie: The Devil Wears Prada
  • Enjoyed the movie.
  • Drove home, and stopped at Costco. (A little bit of the States, right her in Meh-hee-coe.)
All in all, a FANTASTIC day.
